Facebook has started to ban pages from buying ads that share fake news. If the pages repeatedly post links flagged by third-party fact checkers as fake, they won’t be able to create and publish ads until they stop spreading fake news.

Facebook announced “This update will help to reduce the distribution of false news which will keep Pages that spread false news from making money. We’ve found instances of Pages using Facebook ads to build their audiences in order to distribute false news more broadly.”
A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on how many fake posts a page must share to get banned from buying ads. The changes will start taking place immediately today onwards. Facebook had been criticized for fueling fake news into last year’s presidential election.
The company works with various third-party fact checkers like ABC News, PolitiFact, and Snopes. As mentioned in the blog post, Facebook is working on three key areas which are, disrupting the economic incentive to create false news, building new products to curb the spread of false news and helping people make informed decisions when they encounter any false news.
This news comes after the recent penalizing on fake videos which had plagued the social media site. Many pages created fake videos which were only static images or created images which resembled video controls resulting in increased views or photo and link clicks. We covered the whole story here.
